LOVE(MATH) 2.0: Fathers

By Bill McMurtrey

Today’s big question in the service was, "How does your life effect others?" That question got more wheels inside of me turning than I could count. And I’m a numbers guy . . . I can count fast.

What examples do I set for others as I follow Jesus? How am I preparing my children for their future? These are questions for all Dads . . . and Moms, and people! I like to say that moms are the brains and beauty of any operation, sometimes the brawn as well, but the brawn is typically where we dads come through. We as dads, as men, need to be more than that. We need to lead, not just fix. Fixing means something is broken. That means it got to a certain point in order to break.

How do we possibly avoid that pitfall, or right ourselves if we stumble? Ephesians 6:4 is a great example. It tells us, "Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger by the way you treat them. Rather, bring them up with the discipline and instruction that comes from the Lord."

During my children’s lives I have always told them that regardless of where they were, what was going on, that I wanted them to know and never forget these 3 things:

  • God will never forsake them
  • I, regardless of anything that may ever transpire, will always love them, and will always have their back
  • Life is only 10% what happens to us and 90% how we react

My whole life I have told people that I am the son of many men. I had my dad, then my step dad, then all of my uncles, grandpas, but I also had the dads on my street. Those dads were active in our lives as kids. They coached the little league, took us on float trips in the summer. And not only organized but participated in everything from our annual block party to our annual grape stomp for wine making. They were "hands on" dads. They were there to help prepare us for the future. I still have the same set of friends from when I was 5 years old. A few since the days we were born… I’m 54 now.

I took those examples and applied them to what I do now. I invest. I hopefully invest in the future properly not only with my own kids but in the lives of any kids I’m ever able to help. How is your life effecting others today? How might you invest more in the lives of the people around you?

{sunday 6.16.19}

Read Ephesians 6:4

Observe, Reflect, Apply: Take time this week to do one thing that invests in your relationship with your kids . . . or kids you get to connect with.

{personal reflection and bible reading plan}

This week we are trying something new with the Journey study plan. The questions each day focus on your observations, reflections, and application.

For a brief teaching on each days reading, hop over to YouTube and follow Seth Davidson’s Vlog on The Journey Online. Simply follow along, listening to the corresponding date. CLICK HERE to check it out. Be sure to click "subscribe" on the page!

As you read the verses each day, make notes of questions you have about what you’re reading as well as answering the reflection questions below. Grab a friend or two to discuss what you are learning and what God is doing in your lives.

{community discussion questions}

We weren’t meant to experience the life of Jesus alone, so we encourage you to rally a few others to discuss what you are hearing, reading, and reflecting on together. Whether you are meeting as a Journey Community group, talking with a few friends throughout the week, or bringing up spiritual conversations around your table at home, feel free to use some of these questions as conversation starters on your journey.

  • Can you name a takeaway or challenge from the Sunday message?
  • How has that been relevant, challenging, or meaningful to your life this week?
  • What have you observed about God, Jesus, yourself, others, or God’s plan for you from these readings?
  • Where do you need a breakthrough from God this week?
  • Who do you need to share what you’re learning about God with?
