LOVE(MATH) 2.0: Baptism

By Marnie Vasquez

Apple just released their new iWatch. Nike just came out with a new shoe. Carrie Underwood just released her fall fashion workout line. BMW’s latest cars have been upgraded with the newest technology, surpassing others. A new subdivision is being built using only custom builders with homes priced higher than subdivisions around them. Starbucks opened the first sign-language store.

These are just a few of some cool brands. Brands that many enjoy wearing, sporting, holding in our hands. These brands are part of our culture, livelihoods and world. I laugh when I see myself and others with these brands. What are we really doing with these brands? What is this really saying about us?

If I were to be honest, these brands act as symbols to tell others of who we are, what we value, and where we’re at. Brands can represent “I’ve arrived”, “I’ve deserved these things”, “I’m better than someone else”.  These brands can say, “I’m with THIS group and not THAT group.” And when I really dig deep, these brands demonstrate my placement, my lot, in this world. Ugh and ick. But, yet, I see us all rationalize as we use these brands because the coffee really is better, the car really is better, the new iWatch really does make my life easier. Lol.

We’ve baptized ourselves to these brands and what they represent. And I shudder in disappointment because this isn’t what I really want. And then I ask, what should I really baptize myself to?

Baptism, as I’ve come to understand it, is a choice. It’s a declaration to yourself and to others of who you are, what you believe in, and where you stand.

A choice to make Jesus the priority. A choice to surrender to Him, and just let all his love come pouring down on you. A choice to try and stop doing all the crap you’ve done, even though you know it’s going to be tough. A choice that this is your path forward.

Baptism, in my humble opinion, is a brand too. The ultimate brand. The only brand that matters. The only brand that will change your life for the better.

It’s a tough baptism to choose. Because it will create conflict with the world. There will be tough choices to make and situations to navigate through. Friends could be lost, new enemies could be made. You may not be seen as good, in the world’s view.

However, what’s cool about being baptized with the ULTIMATE Jesus brand is you’ve got this incredible force and spirit around you that–when these things happen–it’s protecting you, it’s helping you, even when you stumble and fall. The Holy Spirt never leaves you. You have ultimate value and worth. You are always loved, no matter what you do or don’t do. You have a future and a forever home. You are a known and loved son or daughter.

One question I ask myself continually is what brand am I really baptized to? And scared I might head in the wrong direction, I chase the Jesus brand with all that I’ve got.

{sunday 6.30.19}

Read Acts 2:38-39

Observe, Reflect, Apply: If you’re not baptized yet, ask yourself what is preventing you? What are the major roadblocks in your way? For those who are baptized, as you walk thru this week, ask yourself what can I do to help others and myself be lights for Jesus in a dark world?

{personal reflection and bible reading plan}

This week we are trying something new with the Journey study plan. The questions each day focus on your observations, reflections, and application.

For a brief teaching on each days reading, hop over to YouTube and follow Seth Davidson’s Vlog on The Journey Online. Simply follow along, listening to the corresponding date. CLICK HERE to check it out. Be sure to click "subscribe" on the page!

As you read the verses each day, make notes of questions you have about what you’re reading as well as answering the reflection questions below. Grab a friend or two to discuss what you are learning and what God is doing in your lives.

{community discussion questions}

We weren’t meant to experience the life of Jesus alone, so we encourage you to rally a few others to discuss what you are hearing, reading, and reflecting on together. Whether you are meeting as a Journey Community group, talking with a few friends throughout the week, or bringing up spiritual conversations around your table at home, feel free to use some of these questions as conversation starters on your journey.

  • Can you name a takeaway or challenge from the Sunday message?
  • How has that been relevant, challenging, or meaningful to your life this week?
  • What have you observed about God, Jesus, yourself, others, or God’s plan for you from these readings?
  • Where do you need a breakthrough from God this week?
  • Who do you need to share what you’re learning about God with?
