I AM: God’s Story

By Debbie Kirk

The book was a gift from my mom and it sat in the top drawer of my dresser for years until I finally picked it up, opened the cover and began to read its first chapter. “The Secret Garden” by Francis Hodgson Burnett.

My mother’s intention was that if I would just read this book that she had read and loved, I would love it too. I wasn’t interested, until the day it called to me and for some reason I listened. It had sat gathering dust, kept from being the key that would unlock my love for reading. Since then I have read more books than I can remember and fallen in love with storytelling.

Life is full of stories to read and stories to tell. Whether it’s the New York Best sellers or the newest block buster movies, we all gravitate and live our lives in and through story. But, there are two stories we might be missing out on. They might be sitting in the top drawer of our dresser or in a deep place of the heart, waiting to be read, valued and understood. God’s story and our own story. These two intertwine like a good mystery. As you begin to unravel them, the mystery is revealed in God’s love for us in every single chapter.

I’ve had the opportunity to do some inner work over the past few years by looking deeply into God’s story and the one he has dreamed for me, in a course similar to the I AM class. He has shown me that he doesn’t throw out the bad parts and keep only the good. He takes the whole messy, beautiful manuscript and weaves his purpose into it.

Craig was spot on in today’s message when he said it takes courage to know and experience to grow. I’ve spent most of my life devouring every word of a good story, while unintentionally neglecting my own. I thought I knew myself pretty well, but until I hit pause long enough to dig a little deeper into these two stories, I didn’t realize how much I had to learn. Some was hard but most of it has been truly amazing and lifegiving. God wants us to know him and he wants us to know ourselves from his perspective. This intersection is where the mystery becomes the masterpiece.

If you have ever thought about digging a little deeper and finding clarity and purpose in your story, would you consider jumping in on Tuesday nights for the I AM class? God has given us a story he knows we will love, and if we will have the courage to open the cover and begin, he will meet us there.

{sunday 9.15.19}

Read Jeremiah 33:3

Observe, Reflect, Apply: Do you wonder what your purpose is, why you are here and where you are going? Does it excite you or scare you to consider digging a bit deeper into your story? Would you pray and ask God if you should consider taking the I AM course? Jesus, give us courage and a plan as we seek to understand the beautiful way you have made each of us and how our story intertwines with yours. Amen.

Do you ever wonder what God’s will is for your life? Why are you here on this earth? What is your purpose—or do you even have one? You are not alone with questions like these. We have this idea of God’s will as something unknowable and mysterious, when it’s really spelled out clearly in His Word. A good starting point is to sign up for the I AM Course on Tuesdays here at Heartland. Find out Who God is, so that you can know who you are in Him.

{community discussion questions}

We weren’t meant to experience the life of Jesus alone, so we encourage you to rally a few others to discuss what you are hearing, reading, and reflecting on together. Whether you are meeting as a Journey Community group, talking with a few friends throughout the week, or bringing up spiritual conversations around your table at home, feel free to use some of these questions as conversation starters on your journey.

  • Can you name a takeaway or challenge from the Sunday message?
  • How has that been relevant, challenging, or meaningful to your life this week?
  • What have you observed about God, Jesus, yourself, others, or God’s plan for you from these readings?
  • Where do you need a breakthrough from God this week?
  • Who do you need to share what you’re learning about God with?
