FAQs

go. in general:

q: Why are we doing three things (move, missions, multiply) and not just one?
We want go. to advance our entire mission and not just a part of it. We landed on “move, missions, and multiply” by asking 3 key questions: (1) “What is in our 'DNA?'” (2) “What are the gifts that God has entrusted us with?” and (3) “What are the areas that He continues to grow among us now?”

q: With all the emphasis on go., what will happen to our annual ministry budgets?
We expect them to grow as well. Historically, a capital campaign helps to raise an awareness of needs, deepens an understanding of stewardship, and ignites a greater passion for a church's mission. These factors help to increase giving in all areas.

q: How is the go. campaign itself being paid for?
We have an established budget that is roughly 1% of the estimated cost to move, do missions, and multiply. The money has been loaned out from our healthy cash reserves - which we established for such a time as this.

move:

q: How will a new home help us grow as a church?
Our mission is to be a “200% church”: 100% a church that is 100% for the unchurched. By creating lots more seats (in our services), spots (in our parking lot), and space (in our building), we will be able to grow as a biblically-functioning church that is for the over 800,000+ unchurched people in KC who do not yet know Jesus.

q: When do we hope to move?
We intend to move to our new home by the end of 2009. The identification, design, and construction of our new home will take up to three years to complete. So, in the meantime, we will continue to find ways to build a church for the unchurched right here at 8301 Lamar!

q: Are we in a position to buy a property right now?
Yes. Based on our existing equity in 8301 Lamar and our long-standing relationship with the bank, we are positioned to buy when the right property is identified.

q: Does the $15 million include the sale of our current facility? No. Our current location is appraised between $2.5 and $3 Million (we currently carry a $1.3 million debt). Provided that it makes the most sense to sell, our net cost would then be roughly $12 Million.

q: Is the $15 million our goal?
No. It is simply the approximated cost. Our financial GOAL is simple: (1) that EVERYONE participates sacrificially and that (2) we raise as much towards that cost as we possibly can. So whether it’s $4 million or $20 million, we will celebrate WHATEVER amount God chooses to raise among us.

q: What if we raise only a portion of the $15 million?
We would prayerfully proceed as planned. If we raise $4 million, for example, we would still purchase the property and then take out a construction loan. Next, we would immediately begin a second campaign and continue to pursue our value of minimized debt.

q: Will our new home look like what we've seen of other churches (i.e. Crossroads, Northpoint, etc)?
First and foremost, our new home will look like us. It will be inviting, functional, relaxed, creatively designed, and, um, extremely good looking. This will come from a combination of things - both from our existing home (think bookstore) and from specific elements that we’ve researched from other churches.

missions:

q: How do I find out more about Heartland’s mission strategy?
Through HEMI (Heartland Extension Ministry Initiative), we currently have 21 different ministry partnerships around the globe. From our own food pantry (that serves the poor of our own community) to our efforts in Haiti – and in each HEMI ministry in between – we strive to develop relationships, send resources, and mobilize disciples to the ends of the earth and back. For more info, please go to www.heartlandchurch.org/hemi or contact Jordanne Bonfield at 913.341.5820 x 109.

q: How can I get more involved with the AIDS center project in Lagos, Nigeria?
We are sending teams and resources to help build their “Africa Center for Urban & Holistic Ministries.” We’ll need craftsmen, computer specialists, medical care professionals, painters, administrative geniuses, trip planners – you name it. Find out more at www.heartlandchurch.org/go or at our go. space in the atrium.

multiply:

q: What is Heartland’s church planting strategy?
Essentially, we strive to do what Jesus did with His disciples: invite people to follow Him, nurture and train them along the way, and then send them out to fulfill the great commission together. We plant churches because we believe (a) it is the only way we can effectively reach the 800,000 of our community, (b) it provides a limitless path of growth for our developing leaders, and (c) it provokes a domino-effect of go.’s in the hearts of the many who will go with them!

q: How does Heartland plan to partner in planting a church through Mission Adelante, Inc?
Beyond helping them with the purchase of their much-needed facility, we will be sending people and additional resources on a variety of levels (everything from sending those who feel the call of God to move into the neighborhood, to sending those who are willing to help on a Saturday service project). Find out more @ www.heartlandchurch.org/go or at our go. space in the atrium.

giving questions:

q: How do I know that Heartland handles its finances with 100% integrity?
In addition to the constitutional oversight provided by our Trustee Board, Heartland is one of only 3 churches in the KC area to be approved by the Evangelical Council for Financial Accountability (ECFA). To become ECFA certified, we completed an in-depth 5-year approval process; and we proudly maintain our ECFA approved status by submitting to yearly audits. For more information on the ECFA's standards and approval methods, please go to www.ecfa.org

q: Should I transfer my regular giving amount over to go.?
No. It’s extremely vital that we continue to support our mission on a day-to-day basis while, at the same time, we go ABOVE AND BEYOND in contributing to go. So please continue to faithfully tithe to our regular ministry fund.

q: May I donate stock or an asset like my car, a baseball card collection, jewelry, or some real estate property?
Yes. All stocks/bonds may be gifted directly to Heartland. Any and all assets of proven value may be donated through our go. foundation. Be sure to attend one of our Asset Seminars for more information on the ease and benefits to you and to Heartland. Find out more @ www.heartlandchurch.org/go or at our go. space in the atrium.

q: After making my commitment on 11/19, when do I bring my first actual gift?
Our 3-year commitment begins on the very next Sunday, 12.3.06 – what we’re calling “First Fruits Sunday.” While we all have three years to fulfill our commitments, we do encourage you to bring as much of that as you can on 12.3.06 to help give us a huge boost towards our three go. projects!
