Infant - Kindergarten

Great Beginnings

Sunday mornings at 9 and 11 a.m.
Our Great Beginnings program is for infants through kindergarten.

The staff and volunteers of Great Beginnings hope to give children a first impression of a loving heavenly Father. We are also committed to making Heartland a safe place for kids.

Check out our exciting curriculum for 1 1/2 year olds and up – My First Look.

Great Beginnings focuses on these three truths:

  • God made me
  • God loves me
  • Jesus wants to be my friend forever

We teach these truths through crafts, music and storytelling. We would like to help families continue teaching these truths at home with the help of "small talk" available in your child's classroom.

Nursing Mom? We have a nursing Mom’s room where you can watch the service via video.

Want to Learn More? A staff member would love to give you a tour and tell you all about our programs! Click here to email Lynn at or call 341-5820 x317.

Expecting a baby? We would love to know when your little one arrives. Please call the front office so we welcome your new baby 913.341.5820

Short Term Summer Opportunity

Posted: May 04 2010

Did you know that it takes a lot of volunteers on Sunday morning to ensure that the kids of Heartland are not only safe, but also learning about Jesus?

We would love for you to come be a part of our Summer volunteer group.  We need you to serve just 7 times between mid-June and early September - and you choose the age group (infants through 5th grade).

We'll train you and set you up to succeed - and to have a bunch of fun in the process.

If you're a parent, we’d especially encourage you to jump in and take this opportunity to volunteer with Children's Ministry.  You as a parent are the primary faith shaper in your child's life – and we know that the training and experience you'll get through serving in Children's Ministry will help you better fill that role with your own child or children.

So let us know if you want to be a part of the wildest, craziest, funniest and most gratifying 7 Sundays of your summer… in Children’s Ministry!

Baptism/Dedication - Children

Posted: Apr 24 2010

Heartland Community Church holds services for infant baptism and dedication in the spring and fall. Our next baptism and dedication will be Saturday, November 6, 2010 at 9:30, 10:30 and 11:30.  You can sign up online and complete the form by clicking here.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between dedication and baptism?

The choice between baptizing and dedicating a child should be made to reflect your personal conviction and heritage in faith. Heartland considers infant baptism and dedication as two different traditions that achieve the same end. Common to each tradition is a focus on the parents’ intention to raise and nurture the child in Christ. Neither dedication nor baptism guarantees salvation for a child; salvation is dependent upon an individual willingly choosing Jesus as his own savior. Our hope for all the children of Heartland is that one day each will personally accept Jesus as savior. Then, to symbolize that decision, each will choose to be baptized as an adult. As parents, you determine which tradition best fits your family and your thinking. That said, we at Heartland will dedicate a child of any age and we will baptize any child under the age of three.

How often do you have the dedication and baptism services?

We have services twice a year, typically on Mother’s Day in May and on a selected Sunday in the fall.

Do I need to do anything before the service besides complete the registration form?

No. When you arrive at the service, everything will be ready for you.

Do I have to be a member of Heartland to have my child dedicated or baptized?

No, you don’t have to be a member.

Can you briefly describe the service?

A Heartland Pastor leads the service and sets an informal family atmosphere. The Biblical perspective on dedicating and baptizing children is explained. Families are called upfront and parents are asked two questions. These questions explore choices parents must make in raising a child while making public the parents’ determination to rear their child in the ways of the Lord to the best of their ability. A pastoral elder or staff person then prays with your family individually.

Can I invite friends and family?

Definitely!

Is there a "dress code" for children?

Not at all. You will see children dressed in everything from 100-year-old Christening gowns to cute outfits from Old Navy.

Can older siblings who are not being dedicated or baptized come up with the parents?

Of course. The service carries greater meaning when an entire family takes part.

Where does the service take place?

The service will be held in our atrium.

How long does the service last?

Expect the service to take about 30 minutes.

Why do you limit each service to 10 participating families?

This makes for a more intimate and calmer experience for the families.

How will I know I am signed up for the service?

You will receive a confirmation email so we can verify details concerning your child.

Can I have godparents for my child?

Yes! But because of our limited space we only have the parents come up front to present the child for baptism or dedication.

What if I have additional questions?

If you have any other questions please contact Angela Horton by calling (913) 548-3604 or via e-mail at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)

Parents as Volunteers

Posted: Jan 09 2010

We now ask parents who call Heartland their home to serve in Children's Ministry.  We know parents need to be the primary faith builders in a family to have the greatest impact on their kids.  We also think that Heartlands classrooms and small groups for kids are the best spiritual labs we have.  We are asking parents to serve once a month, but if you are able to serve twice a month as a room leader or small group leader that will help fill our highest need.  We understand that some parents are currently in stormy circumstances that make serving impossible.  We extend grace to them.  We are confident that you will have deeper and richer conversations about faith with your kids if you learn beside them on Sunday mornings.  You do not have to serve with the same age as your child/children.  Please sign up here.  On question number three please mark "children's leader".   After filling out the form you will hear from a Children's ministry staff member. Together Heartland and parents can help kids fall in love with Jesus!

Cold and Flu Season and the H1N1 Virus

Posted: Jan 06 2010

We all want our kiddos to share…but when it comes to illness, we want to keep any sharing to a minimum! So we ask that parents help us out by not bringing a sick child to church youth programs. Doing so creates the risk of sharing the illness with other children, and it’s also rough for the sick child who’d be better off resting in the comfort of his or her own home.

Wondering whether or not your child is too sick to participate? The answer is probably ‘yes’ if the child displays one or more of the following symptoms:

·     Fever above 100 degrees Fahrenheit during the past 24 hours

·     Signs of possible severe illness such as uncontrolled coughing, difficulty breathing, wheezing, persistent crying or lethargy

·     Diarrhea, such as loose or runny stools including a stool that runs out of a diaper

·     Vomiting (once a child has vomited, most health providers recommend or require that the child not return to school or daycare for a minimum of 24 hours)

·     Any rash, especially one accompanied by a fever or behavior change

·     Any communicable disease (in this case, please notify the church so that parents of exposed children can be alerted)
