What If The Church...

Our next series, “What if the church…” runs May 18- June 1 and includes two very important events that we want to get on your calendar. In this series Heartland is partnering with Cedar Ridge Christian Church and Westside Family Church to explore what might happen if the church believed, prayed, and served together in unity.

The first date to put on your calendar is the God of This City Prayer and Worship Event, Wednesday, May 28, 7:00 PM at Theatre in the Park (Shawnee Mission Park). The bands from all three churches will partner to lead us in this incredible event.

The second date we want you to hold open is our combined Serve Day, Saturday, June 7th. We will be working from checkpoints at the Hope Center in KCMO, and Bethany Park (12th and Central) in KCK. Morning and afternoon shifts are available and lunch will be provided.

More information and sign up will be available next week at www.whatifthechurch.net.

Food For The Hungry

Mike Varel has been involved in The Gathering and a volunteer for children's ministry. He recently produced a video for Food for the Hungry's Community to Community Program (C2C) is about churches in America coming around communities in the developing world to offer help, prayer, support, a relationship in which both communities are transformed. Heartland Community Church has partnered with Zeway, Ethiopia for two years. Click here for our new C2C video that tells their story, and more about the C2C program featuring folks from The Gathering. You gotta see this! It's worth the time to download.

Work Day at Rhodes

What you see at the right is the gigantic pile of carpet that was removed and hauled to be recycled. Around 60 people showed up for the first work day at our new Rhodes building. Over 100,000 square feet of carpet was pulled up in little over an hour.

The new facility is utilizing LEED standards to be good stewards both during the demolition and construction. Everyone had a great time pitching in and helping to ready the facility for the construction. In addition, Mary Beth McGrew led a prayer walk around the building during the workday.

There will be another work day to recycle ceiling tiles in the near future. Thanks goes to Ryan Heckman for organizing the day and everyone who volunteered!

Men's Clothing Drive

The main goal for the work day was to sort and distribution the Men's Clothes that were collected the week before. Brian Wright (pictured right) and Ryan Fagan did a fantastic job spreading the word about the clothing drive and, as always, the Heartland Community generously gave. They collected 52 large trash bags full as well as 71 pairs of shoes. On Saturday a group of Reaching Out volunteers sorted shirts, pants, sweaters, belts, ties, suits and even a tuxedo. Each category was sorted by sizes as well!

The clothes were then taken to various locations that minister to men who are in need. We dropped clothes at the Community Action Service, the City Union Mission Men's shelter and a 18th and Oak Street Ministry that cares for those on the street and in need. If anyone is interested in other Reaching Out service opportunities, please have them contact me, Liz Sears, ejsears@gmail.com.
