THE JOURNEY

INTERIOR DESIGN: God’s Handiwork

By Bill McMurtrey

The Great Design. That is how I see the universe and everything in it. Everything. It’s God’s design. And it’s done in His will. Will, that’s a word that can be overlooked.

Every morning, every single morning since about the age of 5 or 6 I’ve started my day by doing the same thing. No one taught me this, this came to me on my own. After I’m up and have put on some clothes and shoes on my feet, I go outside to my backyard. I pray the same prayer every morning. And I ask God how can I serve him best today? I look up at the sun. And I finish my prayer with, "God, may your will be done.”  Rain, sleet, extreme heat, it doesn’t matter . . . before I do anything else I go outside to pray. And I pray that there’s never a day that I don’t.

Asking God for stuff is like telling God our plans. It doesn’t work that way, does it? He is in control of everything. He is the “Great Designer.” It is only by His will that we exist.

"Many are the plans in the minds of men, but it is the purpose of the Lord that shall stand.”
Proverbs 19:21

I like plans and planning . . . I may not be the best planner in town, but I work diligently to be in the top 10. Other than God, do you know who the king of planning was? Mr. Benjamin Franklin. If you’re looking for an informative read check out his biography . . . impressive. Ben was a pretty busy guy. A few of his accomplishments include being the nation’s first Postmaster General and discovering the electricity we all use every day. In his spare time he did things like invent bifocal glasses, the iron furnace stove, and the odometer.

The one quote of Ben’s that is synonymous with everything in life is, “When we fail to plan, we plan to fail.” There is no denying that is true. We either make excuses or we make it happen. It’s impossible to have both. And planning helps us get there.

The Bible tells us in Proverbs 16:3: “Commit your work to the Lord, and your plans will be established.”

When Shibu finished today he spoke about sharing God’s love. That resonated with me in regards to a pet project I recently made plans for. Every Thursday, I plan on making meals, then delivering them to people that I know either need a little help, just need a reminder that they are cared for, or are in need of someone simply sharing God’s love with them. I’m making this a weekly thing. My invitation and challenge to you is to prayerfully consider replicating it. Make one meal a week and take to a neighbor, friend, coworker or anyone that you can spread God’s love to. If you do that, I would love to hear back about your experience!

There is a lot going on right now. COVID, the stress of job losses, uncertainty of what could happen next. But the one constant, the one thing that we all have access to, is God and His love. And that’s why I go into my backyard every day, praying my prayer. To remind myself that I am surrounded by God. As the song said today, “This is how I fight my battle . . . it may look like I’m surrounded, but I’m surrounded by you.”

What are you doing to be reminded that He is with you, surrounding you, all day, every day? What will you do to share God’s love with others?

{sunday 1.10.21}

Read Proverbs 19:21, Proverbs 16:3, Ephesians 2:10

Observe, Reflect, Apply: How can you cooperate with God and his design for you? In his renewal plans for your mind, heart, and life? Once you are in tune with God, how can you begin to live from that purpose and build your plans to cooperate with God?

{bible reading plan: psalms}

By Marnie Vasquez

{monday 1.11.21}

Read Psalm 96

Read, Ponder, Pray: It’s a new week. Yes!! Thank you, God, we need a new week! Thank you for allowing us to survive 2020, to surviving last week, too. We need a new week, a new beginning! We need this. The world we live in is quickly changing around us. Sometimes so fast, it’s hard to stay caught up. We need to hold on tight to the Lord, look to Him for guidance in all that is happening, especially when the world wants to silence the Lord. God cannot be silenced. He loves us deeply. He’s chasing after us. Thank you for that, God, thank you! Let’s start this week and give praises to our heavenly Father.

{tuesday 1.12.21}

Read Psalm 97

Observe, Reflect, Apply: How can you deny that God is God, ruler and God above all else? Keep searching for his wonderful, amazing works happening among us. Right here in our neighborhoods, in our homes. It is happening. He is working all things out for our good. Keep looking! Don’t stop! Open your minds, hearts and eyes and you will see God working to find you, save you, lift up your life! He continues to shine His amazing light and love on you, he wants you! He is greater than anything our world can provide us. Anything. And continues to pour out His love on you. Only God can do that.

{wednesday 1.13.21}

Read Psalm 98

Observe, Reflect, Apply: God is coming to judge the earth. The entire earth. When? Only God knows. And as we wait for Him, it’s breathtaking to stop, consider and wonder about all He has done to demonstrate His great and deep love for us. And not from our own eyes and experiences, but from everything He has created.

{thursday 1.14.21}

Read Psalm 99

Observe, Reflect, Apply: Is it possible that how the Old Testament played out could play out in modern times, today? Is that possible? Is God giving us clues and signs into our own lives today on what his plans are while continuing to demonstrate his deep, deep love for us? Consider today’s Psalm and what that means in your life, your community.

{friday 1.15.21}

Read Psalm 100

Observe, Reflect, Apply: We’ve made it to Friday, hallelujah, what a week! As we celebrate, let’s keep in mind how amazing God is. He made you. Me. Those around us. He cares for us more than he does the beautiful flowers and incredible birds He’s created. His love never stops. Never ceases. Even though we continue to stumble and goof up, He’s by our side, never leaving us. Steadfast. Amazing! Thank you for loving us so much, and thank you for getting us to Friday!
