THE JOURNEY

Wisdom’s Starting Line

By Lisa Zulke

I love starting lines. Absolutely anything is possible at the start line. In a race, I could run a personal best time. On the first day on the job, I could enter the first day of my new career. The first day at a new school, I could meet my lifelong best friend at recess.

I love the reminder from the message today that every moment of life could be a starting line. There is always an opportunity for a fresh start, a new focus, a burst of energy, or a moment to grow.

When I look at my running start line experiences and my starting over in life experiences, there is a similar tipping point that requires a hard decision. The decision to commit comes easily, and the hard decision is to remove me from the center of the narrative and submit myself to training, being coached, and learning from the wisdom of others. I’m a capable person. Through trial and error, I have learned I can "capable-person" myself into injury, over-training, under-training, and many other rabbit trails. I could have avoided many pitfalls and side roads if I had sought wise counsel, applied what I learned, and accepted coaching tips.

That God inspired a whole book in the Bible to gather bits of wisdom, life coaching, and training tips for you and me is incredible! The Proverbs are a great read on a regular rotation because I can always find something new to apply. The key to life change is in the act of using that wisdom.

I look forward to taking a new approach this summer as we read the Proverbs together. I hope you join me!

Summer Journey Reading Instructions:

Read the chapter of the day 2-3 times, and take note of what stands out to you. Ponder the words of wisdom throughout the day, and answer these questions:

  • What picture or instruction does God give me about building a great life?
  • Is there anything I notice here that runs contrary to my normal daily life?
  • What do I want to remember or work on . . . write it on a card or add a note to your phone to remind you.
  • If these verses were the measure, am I wise?
