THE JOURNEY

Discipline and Love

By Lisa Zulke

Reflecting on the various coaching/instructional styles we heard today, I recognize my responsiveness to authoritative leaders/coaches/parents. The ability to speak with authority, teach how to process the world, and allow the freedom to explore and possibly fail is an incredible gift we can give others.

A few lessons I most appreciate from my childhood came from Mrs. Weinbrenner, Mr. Kleckner, and Larry Didier. In Kindergarten, Mrs. Weinbrenner spoke life into my creativity, love for learning, and unlimited potential. She used words of affirmation and encouragement that led me to love school and stretch to learn new things.

Mr. Kleckner was my stu-co advisor and guidance counselor. He led in the hallways with an authoritarian style. Still, his developmental skills came to life in stu-co and private conversations. He was the first person to call out my leadership skills, ability to cast a vision and get others involved, and passion for a good cause. Because of his words and questions, I developed confidence as a young leader. I was willing to take risks and challenge others to take part in making our school community better.

Larry was my community youth group advisor and biggest champion. Our group was not church affiliated but focused on peer counseling, leadership development, and community involvement. Through an incredible array of training opportunities and his words of encouragement, my leadership skills took root, and my confidence in expressing my thoughts as a speaker grew tremendously.

These three people each had a hand in my decision to run for an elected school board position at 18. I spoke at campaign events and got elected over two incumbents to serve four years in my hometown. Now THAT was an incredible learning experience!

Each of these influential adults in my life formed a facet of the person I would become. They saw and helped me see my potential by speaking and guiding it to life. At the time, I never thought of it as discipline. The thought of discipline being formative really makes sense as I reflect on these people and their influence.

The question I am pondering today is, who am I speaking encouragement over? Who might I be in the perfect position to form in the best way by coming alongside? How about you…who comes to mind as you ponder those questions?

Summer Journey Reading Instructions:

Read the chapter of the day 2-3 times, and take note of what stands out to you. Ponder the words of wisdom throughout the day, and answer these questions:

  • What picture or instruction does God give me about building a great life?
  • Is there anything I notice here that runs contrary to my normal daily life?
  • What do I want to remember or work on . . . write it on a card or add a note to your phone to remind you.
  • If these verses were the measure, am I wise?
